Temporarily-accused sex criminal and Frenchman Dominique Strauss-Kahn may be safely back in the motherland, but the spectre of hotel rape remains. The threat is apparently disquieting enough to justify mandatory rape alert buttons for New York’s hotel employees.
Rape is unfortunately a very common crime against women, specially women that work in hotel rooms where an assaulter could very easily trap a victim. The case listed above regarding Dominique Strauss-Kahn, has finally sent out the “It’s enough” bell on the New York Hotel Association. The association will guarantee that 30,000 maids across the New York City will get a button to trigger for threatening situations.
In case you’re not familiar with who Dominique Strauss-Kahn is, Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, led the French opinion polls for months as the man most likely to become France’s next president, consistently outshining the little-loved conservative incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy.
But in 2011 while Mr. strauss-Kahn was vising New York, he was hauled off an Air France flight minutes before takeoff, arrested and facing charges of attempted rape and a criminal sex act. If you would like to learn more about the case, visit The Australian
None of the less, because of assaults like the one listed above, Hotels across New York will begin to offer maids a way to stay safe. The Button, once activated, will summon help immediately. Even though the Hotel Association claims that the button was not installed because of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case, the name of the button “DSK Buttons”, seems to say otherwise. [NYT]
